There are so many things with media I say no to, escpecially with my kids. I worry over inappropriate content, they way my kids act when they are exposed to certain types of media, the way their brains seem to turn to mush after too much exposure to video games. Even the pure fact that spending too much time doing these meaningless tasks is taking away from productivity or wholesome recreation. I heard a comment today that was something like this. For every hour spent with reality TV another book dies. Not true, but funny, especially if you have thoughts like me about being careful with content or time.
But here is the deal there is a ton of really great stuff out there! Stuff that operates on a higher frequency of truly leaving us feeling positive, good and motivated. So even though you might know where to find it, does your family and do you spend time there? That's what tonight is about. Spending shill time as a family seeking after good and then sharing it with each other.
This might be the easiest and most relaxing family night you have had yet!
Uplifting Media -- Family Home Evening
Opening Prayer -
Scripture - “For as [a man] thinketh in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7).
Today we want to focus on good media. Media that uplifts and inspires.
Joseph B Wirthlin said, “In a day when broadcasters and publishers have rather free access into our homes, we must seek clean, uplifting entertainment, whether on television, videos, movies, magazines, books, and other printed material. We should be very selective and choose only those things that meet the test of being virtuous, lovely, of good report, or praiseworthy.”
Wiith individual devices and headphones, everyone go to lds.org. Then click on Inspiration and News and then Inspiring Media. From there it’s like choose your own adventure! Take your own time (20-30 minutes) to watch videos that you select. At the end of your time share with us your favorite video.
*As you share take a little time to talk about what and why your family members made the selections they did. Also point out to each other where they clicked to get to that video. This is to teach them how to seek out good media and where to find all this goodness!
Closing Prayer -
